WhatsApp Diwali Marketing: A Festive Season Playbook for India
WhatsApp Diwali marketing works when the hard part is done before the festival begins. Start 4–6 weeks ahead: get marketing templates approved, check how many people Meta lets you message a day, segment your list and pick offers that protect margin. Then send a few well-timed messages across the October–November festive season, not one blast on Diwali day.
This guide assumes the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API).
The season is a month, not a day
For most of India the stretch runs from Navratri through Dussehra, Karwa Chauth, Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj, with Durga Puja in the east and Chhath Puja about a week after Diwali in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Navratri usually begins about four weeks before Diwali, so “six weeks early” means ready before Navratri.
Peaks differ by trade: gold, utensils, electronics and vehicles cluster around Dhanteras; clothing, gifts and home decor build through the month; sweets and dry fruits spike in the final week.
Why you need 4–6 weeks
Three things on the platform cannot be rushed.
- Your messaging limit. Meta caps how many unique people you can message first, with templates, in a rolling 24 hours. The cap rises in tiers, not overnight, as you send steadily with a good quality rating. Meta has revised the tiers more than once, so check your current limit in WhatsApp Manager today. If it is below your list size on Dhanteras eve, part of your list will not hear from you.
- Template approval. Reviews are often quick, but rejections happen; do not leave rewrites for festival week.
- Your quality rating. It reflects how people reacted to your recent messages. A calm month before the season builds headroom.
- Six weeks out: clean the list, confirm opt-in, fix offers and budget.
- Five weeks out: submit every template, plus a backup of each.
- Four weeks out: build segments, test on staff numbers, and send steadily to your most engaged customers so your limit can grow.
- Three weeks out: start the calendar below.
Get festive templates approved in advance
The template category sets the price. Anything promotional, including offers, new collections and even a plain “Happy Diwali from all of us”, is a marketing template, the most expensive category. Order and delivery updates are utility templates and cost less. Replies within 24 hours of a customer messaging you are free. As of 2026 Meta bills per delivered template message, so your budget is roughly segment size multiplied by sends multiplied by the marketing rate (see our WhatsApp Cloud API pricing guide for India).
- Submit 3–4 weeks before your first send (our template approval guide walks through it), with two wordings of each so a rejection or pause does not stall you.
- Use variables only for what changes (name, end date, store). Templates that are mostly variables get rejected more often.
- Add an image header and quick-reply buttons such as “Show me” and “Stop offers”. A reply opens the free 24-hour window.
- Do not send a brand-new template to your whole list on a peak day. Meta may pace new marketing templates, holding back part of the send until early reactions come in.
Segment before you send
One message to everyone is the quickest route to a low quality rating. Split by behaviour:
- Last season’s festive buyers: your best audience; offer early access.
- Recent buyers (last 90 days): a relevant bundle works.
- Corporate and bulk buyers: a personal gifting quote beats a broadcast.
- Dormant customers and old leads: one message only, with a real reason to return.
- Region and language: Durga Puja copy for the east, Chhath for Bihar, regional-language versions where customers use them.
Remove opt-outs and anyone whose opt-in you cannot show. A bought or scraped database breaks WhatsApp’s opt-in rules and sinks your rating, so build an opt-in list instead. In a WhatsApp CRM such as ZupiChat, these groups become contact tags and segments you pick when creating a broadcast campaign.
Offers that do not burn margin
Many customers buy at Diwali regardless, so a flat discount on those days mostly gives away profit you would have earned. Run the numbers before promising “30% off”.
| Offer on a ₹1,000 item that costs you ₹600 | Profit per sale | Sales needed for ₹40,000 profit |
|---|---|---|
| Full price | ₹400 | 100 |
| 10% off | ₹300 | 134 |
| 20% off | ₹200 | 200 |
| 30% off | ₹100 | 400 |
| Free gift that costs you ₹60 | ₹340 | 118 |
The figures are illustrative: at a 40% margin, 20% off means doubling sales just to stand still. Offers that hold margin better:
- Early access instead of deeper discounts: past buyers get 48 hours before everyone else.
- Bundles and gift boxes built from stock you already hold, including slow movers.
- Spend thresholds set just above your average order, unlocking free gift wrap or delivery.
- A November voucher that pulls a repeat purchase into the quiet weeks after the festival.
Write the terms in: validity, stock, exclusions. India’s 2023 consumer-protection guidelines on dark patterns list false urgency as one, so “only 3 left” must be true. Check anything borderline with a lawyer.
Frequency limits so your number is not flagged
Three separate limits apply.
- Meta’s messaging limit: unique people you can message first per 24 hours, covered above.
- Meta’s per-user marketing limit: a cap on how many marketing messages one person receives from all businesses combined. When it applies, your message is not delivered and shows an error (code 131049 as of 2026). Because other brands count too, it bites hardest on the days everyone sends, so keep your main offer off Diwali day.
- Your own rule: at most two marketing messages a week for recent and festive buyers, one a week for others, one or two in total for dormant customers, and never two in a day.
Put an opt-out button on every marketing template and honour opt-outs the same day. People who cannot stop your messages block or report you, and Meta weighs those signals heavily.
Watch your quality rating
WhatsApp Manager shows your number’s quality as high (green), medium (yellow) or low (red), based on roughly the last seven days of recipient feedback; blocks and reports pull it down. Marketing templates are rated too, and a poorly received one can be paused for a few hours, for longer if it recurs, and eventually disabled. That is why you keep backups.
Check replies, opt-outs and blocks within hours of every send and drop any segment that reacts badly. A low rating stops your limit rising and, if it keeps falling, can get the number restricted. No software fixes a list that did not want your messages.
A sample 3-week campaign calendar
D is Diwali day; D–21 falls just before Dussehra in most years. Move the first week earlier if Navratri or Durga Puja is your main moment.
| When | Segment | Message | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| D–21 | Past festive buyers and recent buyers | Festive collection or service menu is out, with a “Show me” button | Marketing |
| D–18 | Last season’s festive buyers | 48-hour early access | Marketing |
| D–14 | Corporate and bulk buyers | Gifting options and the last date to confirm bulk orders | Marketing |
| D–12 | Dormant customers | One message: a bundle or gift with purchase | Marketing |
| D–8 | Recent buyers yet to order this season | Last order date for delivery before Diwali | Marketing |
| Day before Dhanteras | Engaged customers in Dhanteras-led trades | Store hours, pre-booking or bestsellers | Marketing |
| D–1 | Top customers | Short thank-you and a November voucher | Marketing |
| D | Nobody | No broadcast: staff the inbox, auto-reply with hours | None |
| D+3 | This season’s buyers | Thank-you and voucher reminder | Marketing |
| Throughout | Anyone who replies | Prices, photos and answers from your team | Service reply (free) |
Order and delivery updates run alongside as utility messages; keep promotions out of them or Meta may treat them as marketing.

Do you need a WhatsApp CRM for this?
Not always. If a few hundred customers have saved your number, the free WhatsApp Business app and its broadcast lists cover a small shop’s Diwali, and a greeting on your Status costs nothing.
The Business Platform earns its cost when your list runs into thousands, several people answer chats, or you need proper segmentation and measurement. If you are moving to it this season, start now, as business verification takes time. ZupiChat is one option, built on the official WhatsApp Business Platform, with broadcast campaigns using approved templates, contact tags and segments, a shared team inbox and a visual flow builder for festive FAQs. See the features and pricing, and compare at least one alternative before the season, not during it.
The short version
- Start 4–6 weeks before Diwali (before Navratri): approve templates, check your limit and quality rating, clean the list.
- Segment by behaviour and region, and never send one message to everyone.
- Do the margin maths first, and prefer early access, bundles and November vouchers to deep discounts.
- Send one or two marketing messages a week at most, keep an opt-out button on every template, and leave Diwali day to the inbox.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start planning WhatsApp marketing for Diwali?
Start four to six weeks before Diwali, which in most years means before Navratri begins. That leaves time to get marketing templates approved, grow your messaging limit through steady sending, clean your opt-in list and build segments. Businesses that start in the final week usually find templates still under review, a daily limit too small for their list, and offers decided in a hurry, which is when margins and quality ratings suffer.
Is a “Happy Diwali” greeting on WhatsApp free to send?
Not through the WhatsApp Business Platform. A greeting you send first must use an approved template, and a greeting with no order or account behind it falls in the marketing category, so every delivered message is billed at the marketing rate. If a greeting is all you want to share, post it on your WhatsApp Status or social pages for free, and keep paid greetings for your best customers, ideally with a small thank-you offer attached.
How many WhatsApp marketing messages can I send in the festive season?
Meta publishes no single safe number. Your messaging limit caps how many unique people you can message first in a rolling 24 hours, and a separate per-user limit caps how many marketing messages each person receives from all businesses combined. Within those, set your own rule: one or two marketing messages a week for engaged customers, one for everyone else, never two in a day, and an opt-out button on every template.
What should I do if my quality rating drops during the Diwali campaign?
Stop marketing sends to cold and dormant segments straight away and find the template that drew the blocks. Switch to your backup if Meta has paused it, and keep answering customers who message you first. The rating reflects roughly the last seven days of feedback, so it tends to recover once complaints stop, but repeated drops can hold back your messaging limit and lead to restrictions on the number.
Is the free WhatsApp Business app enough for festive marketing?
For a small business, often yes. Broadcast lists in the free app hold up to 256 contacts each as of 2026 and reach only people who have saved your number, which keeps messages personal and costs nothing. The app gets hard to manage once you have thousands of customers, several staff replying, or a need to segment and track results. At that point the WhatsApp Business Platform, used directly or through a CRM, is the better fit.
