58.5% of Indian online stores have no WhatsApp link on their website

We checked 667 Indian online stores. In the country where WhatsApp is how people actually talk to businesses, most stores still make you fill in a form.

58.5%No WhatsApp link anywhere on the homepage
5.8%Run an actual WhatsApp platform — about 1 in 17
44.7%Have no share image, so their link preview breaks on WhatsApp
What this is. We fetched the homepage of every .in and .co.in domain in the Tranco top-1M list ranked below 10,000, kept the 667 that are genuinely online stores, and read what the markup declares. 9,681 domains were attempted, 6,569 responded. No browser, no logins, no purchases — everything here is visible in one HTTP request.

How Indian stores use WhatsApp

Share of 667 stores

No WhatsApp at all 58.5%
Some WhatsApp link 41.5%
Prefilled message 16.3%
A real platform 5.8%
A link is not a system. Most stores that use WhatsApp at all are using a plain wa.me link or a free button plugin — no shared inbox, no assignment, no record of what was said. That works until two people are answering, or until someone asks at 11pm.

Read this as a list, not a league table. Only 39 stores in the sample carry an identifiable platform fingerprint, so the gaps between these names are too small to rank anyone. It is shown as counts, not percentages, for that reason. What the number does say clearly is how few Indian stores run a WhatsApp platform at all.

What the stores are built on

Two things that cost these stores enquiries

No share image 44.7%
No phone on homepage 26.2%
The share image matters more in India than most founders think. When a customer forwards your product to a family group — which is how a lot of Indian buying decisions actually get made — a missing og:image turns that into a bare grey link. 44.7% of these stores have no share image set.

What we take from this

The gap is not awareness, it is setup

Every store owner in India knows customers prefer WhatsApp. 58.5% still have no link on the site, which suggests the blocker is the work of setting it up, not the idea.

A link is the first step, not the finish

Of the stores that do have WhatsApp, only a small share run anything behind it. That is fine at five enquiries a day and painful at fifty — the point at which messages get missed is the point at which it starts costing money.

The cheapest fix here is not WhatsApp at all

44.7% have no share image. That is a one-line fix that makes every share of your product look like a product instead of a broken link.

Method, and what this does not measure

Sample: all .in and .co.in domains in the Tranco top-1M list ranked below 10,000, excluding academic, government and infrastructure hosts. 9,681 attempted, 6,569 responded. A domain counts as an online store when it runs a commerce platform we can identify, or shows a real cart plus prices plus product URLs. Stores were kept only when the page also carried at least two India signals (rupee pricing, an Indian phone number, a GSTIN, or an Indian city or address). That left 667 stores.

A WhatsApp platform is counted when the page carries a fingerprint we can attribute to a named provider. A plain wa.me link or a generic button plugin is counted separately, because it is a link rather than a system.

What this cannot see: anything after checkout. A store that sends order updates, delivery alerts or cart-recovery messages over WhatsApp without putting a link on its homepage will look like a "no" here. Read these numbers as WhatsApp as a visible way to contact the store, not as total WhatsApp usage. We also read the homepage only, and some platforms load their widget from a script we cannot attribute, so the platform figure is a floor, not a ceiling.

Questions

What share of Indian online stores have WhatsApp on their website?

41.5% of the 667 Indian online stores we checked have a WhatsApp link on their homepage. The remaining 58.5% have none, which means a visitor who wants to ask a question has to fall back to a form, a phone call or email.

How many Indian stores actually run a WhatsApp Business platform?

5.8% — about 1 in 17. A WhatsApp link is just a link; a platform means a shared inbox, chatbot flows, campaigns and reporting behind it. Most stores that use WhatsApp at all are using a plain link or a free button plugin, not a platform.

How was this measured?

We fetched the homepage of every .in and .co.in domain in the Tranco top-1M list ranked below 10,000, kept the ones that are genuinely online stores, and read what the markup declares. 9,681 domains were attempted and 6,569 responded. Everything is observable from one HTTP request — no browser, no logins, no purchases.

What does this study not measure?

Anything that happens after checkout. If a store sends order updates, delivery alerts or abandoned-cart reminders over WhatsApp without putting a link on its homepage, this method cannot see it. The honest reading is "WhatsApp as a visible way to contact the store", not "WhatsApp usage overall".

Can I use this data?

Yes. The figures are free to quote or republish with a link to this page. If you want the per-domain dataset for a story or your own analysis, email us and we will send the CSV.
